Steven Gerrard may have had more important pre-match build-ups before – ahead of Champions League or FA Cup finals for example – but there can be little doubt that he has yet to have one as emotional as the one before our game with Crystal Palace.
All eyes were on the 34-year-old for the game against the Eagles, as it was to be his final game at Anfield, before his summer move to LA Galaxy.
Unsurprisingly, he received a deserved hero’s reception when he emerged from the tunnel for the warm-up.
And he took part in a brief interview at the end of his preparations, and was in little doubt that, despite missing his last effort against Queens Park Rangers, who would be stepping up for the dead ball situations.
Just before the game started, he walked out to a guard of honour from both sides and another ovation from the Kop that made the hairs on the back of the neck stand up.
Imagine the atmosphere should our skipper be the one to grab the deciding goal.
