The Reds have a fight on their hands to secure a deal for Aston Villa striker Christian Benteke this summer, with reports in Germany suggesting that Wolfsburg are also pursuing the Belgian international.

According to Bild, Wolfsburg are leading the chase for the 24-year-old, who scored his 15th goal of the season in all competitions during the defeat to Southampton on Saturday.

Benteke has been heavily linked with Liverpool for several weeks, most recently by the Daily Mirror, who believe Villa will not stand in the player’s way if he decides that he wants to move on next month.

However, it appears as if we could now be set for disappointment. Wolfsburg have Champions League football to offer, as they close in on second place in the Bundesliga, while Brendan Rodgers still seems unsure on whether to part with such a large fee – rumoured by the Mirror to be around £30m – to get the player.

Benteke is, of course, just one of a number of strikers to be linked with Liverpool recently. We all know that we’re on the lookout for a new centre-forward, having struggled for goals in the absence of Luis Suarez (sold) and Daniel Sturridge (injured), and Benteke was thought to near the top of the list of candidates.

It will certainly be interesting to see how we respond, if indeed we do miss out.
