Our win percentage without the 20-year-old is 100% from the five games he has missed in all competitions this season, but with him in the team, that number plummets to just over 40%, according to the Daily Mail.

We are also more lethal in front of goal when he is missing, averaging two goals per game, compared with just 1.2 goals when the England international plays.

The statistics come towards the end of a season where the former Queens Park Rangers trainee rejected a new contract at the club, and insisted in an interview with the BBC that his motivation was not money, but the desire to win trophies.

And with the BBC reporting this week that Sterling intends to tell the club that he will not be renewing his contract, he may find that with these statistics, he doesn’t draw the attention of the mega-clubs he’s clearly pining after.

At Liverpool, we need players who want to play for our club. We made an exception for one season with Luis Suarez, but he was that good it didn’t matter. Sterling is not.

For the right money, should we sell…?
