According to the Daily Mirror, Rodgers will next week be asked to contribute to an in-depth review of the club’s performance, where some tough and searching questions will be asked about his role.
Rodgers was tasked by our owners with ensuring at least a top four finish and a second consecutive season of Champions League football, but has eventually fallen some way short. We did make two domestic cup semi-finals but we blew our best opportunity of silverware by losing to Aston Villa at Wembley last month.
Despite the difficulties he has had to overcome, the 42-year-old feels that the current campaign – which concludes tomorrow against Stoke City – has made him a better manager.
In fact, he was all smiles during his press conference on Friday, when he was asked about how much support he was getting from our owners and whether he thought they’d stick by him.
“Yeah, yeah. 150 per cent,” Rodgers replied.
“I think you evolve as a manager. Certainly the experiences of this year will make me better. We have been clear with the identity of how we want to play since I’ve been here and obviously it hasn’t quite worked out this season as I would have liked.
“But going forward, I repeat, I will be a better manager for the experiences and hopefully go on next year to be more consistent and we can win more games than we have.”
Despite his confidence, Rodgers is likely to start next season already under pressure. While there won’t be quite the same weight of expectation as there was this season – when we were expected to challenge for the title – the fans will be in a far less forgiving mood during the opening rounds of games.
It will be interesting to see what else, if anything, comes of this review.
