Balotelli, who the Star state joined us for £16m last summer, has endured a miserable twelve months at Anfield. A variety of injuries and mystery illnesses have restricted him to just 15 Premier League appearances, while his form when he has got on the pitch has been poor – just four goals in all competitions, with only one in the top flight.

The 24-year-old enjoyed a far more profitable spell in Milan, scoring 30 goals in 54 games and establishing himself as Italy’s first choice striker. Having also done well at Inter Milan during his teenage years, a return to his home nation seems the most sensible choice for all involved.

Former Sampdoria boss Sinisa Mihajilovic is tipped to take over at the San Siro this week and the Star believe that he’ll make the signing of Balotelli a priority. The Serbian is the favourite to take the position after Milan were turned down by former coach Carlo Ancelotti.

As the Star reports, Balotelli’s agent Mino Raiola has insisted his client will not be moving this summer but we are seemingly desperate to sell. With a deal to sign Burnley’s Danny Ings all but done (via the Mirror), Mario is going to find himself slipping even further down the Anfield pecking order and will surely take it as a hint to move on.
