The Liverpool Echo have referenced reports in Portugal, which are suggesting that Reds winger Lazar Markovic could rejoin former club Benfica this summer.

Markovic only spent a year at Estadio da Luz, but made a big impact, guiding the club to a domestic treble and the final of the Europa League. He scored seven goals in 49 appearances and earned himself a move to Anfield.

However, the 21-year-old has struggled to live up to expectations following his big-money move. He’s only scored three times in 31 games and last completed 90 minutes for the Reds back in January.

With competition for places likely to be fiercer than other next season – with Adam Lallana, Philippe Coutinho, Raheem Sterling and Jordon Ibe among those already competing for an attacking midfield role – Markovic’s future has a question mark hanging over it.

The vast majority of Liverpool fans would be highly disappointed to see such a promising young talent leave the club. He showed flashes of his potential last year, scoring crucial goals against Sunderland and Tottenham, but needs to find a bit more in the way of consistency. Perhaps a loan move would be best for all involved.

Here’s how A Bola reported it today:
