Liverpool hopeful of signing TWO right-backs this summer, with new Clyne bid imminent

Reports in the Daily Mirror suggest that the Reds are aiming to tie-up a deal for Joe Gomez later this week, while they also expect us to make an improved bid for Southampton and England star Nathaniel Clyne.

With Glen Johnson having now left us and with Jon Flanagan likely to miss much of next season through injury, we currently have very few options available to us at right-back. Youngsters Javier Manquillo and Andre Wisdom are both on the books, although neither are believed to be seen as first-choice options.

According to the Mirror, we are preparing to make a £12m offer for Clyne, despite having seen a £10m bid turned down last month. Southampton are likely to play hard-ball over the transfer and demand at least £15m for one of their prize assets, although the Reds will hope to test their resolve by meeting them half-way.

A deal for Charlton Athletic youngster Gomez is believed to be all but done, with the Mirror claiming that an initial fee of £3.5m will be enough to make a move happen. The teenager is a centre-back by trade but spent most of last season playing on the right, so would subsequently offer cover in both positions.

He could also be loaned back to Charlton or another Championship club to gain more first-team experience, at least according to reports in The Guardian. Gomez is expected to replace Sebastian Coates, who will make his loan move to Sunderland a permanent one.

If Gomez is loaned out, then expect one of Manquillo and Wisdom to stay put and provide cover for Clyne – or any other senior right-back that we might potentially sign this summer.
