The news will certainly raise some eyebrows among the Anfield faithful, who have been reading week after week that we were edging closer to a deal. While you always have to take the tabloids with a pinch of salt, it seems impossible to think that the insurmountable number of rumours we’ve seen have all come out of nowhere.

Occasionally you see a stray rumour that comes out of the blue and quickly disappears again, but we’ve been reading about the Croatian for months now – surely there has to be some truth in these suggestions?

Only 24 hours ago, the Daily Express were among those reporting that the Reds had made another bid for the player, albeit one that was quickly rejected. They suggest that we attempted to offer former Inter striker Mario Balotelli as part of the deal, but the Milan side weren’t interested.

Someone is making up something, that’s for sure. Unfortunately, King’s assessment is probably the more likely…
