We recently announced the signing of Joe Gomez (via the BBC), having secured the young centre-back from Charlton Athletic for £3.5m.
The 18-year-old seems determined to force his way into the first team as soon as possible, but is well aware that he faces plenty of competition for a starting spot.

During his first interview since joining the club, Gomez discussed his ambitions, his hopes, and why he was so keen to make the move to Liverpool.
He insists that he wants to improve under Brendan Rodgers, and hopes to be challenging for a first team spot in the near future.
“Being a young player, I know that opportunities can be slim sometimes. But under a manager like Brendan, it speaks for itself. That’s why I was really keen to come here and play under him,” Gomez said, as quoted by LFC.com.
“I want to come in and challenge and be involved. But I know that there’s top-quality players and the centre-backs and defenders already here are great. I’d like to come in, do my best and learn from them.”
“[I want] to get involved in the team and challenge for a place. And make my debut as soon as possible. Long-term, to be a key part of the team and win trophies.”
He only recently broke into the Charlton Athletic team, but his rise has been meteoric. Hopefully the youngster can continue to improve at the same rate, and begin challenging the likes of Martin Skrtel and Dejan Lovren for a place.
He already has the physical attributes necessary to succeed in the English top flight, and with the experience we have at the club he is sure to improve other aspects of his game as well.
