Liverpool outcast set to join Marseille after agreeing loan move

Former Liverpool defender Javier Manquillo has today agreed a loan move from Atletico Madrid to Marseille, after having his two-year deal at Anfield cut short by Brendan Rodgers earlier this summer.

According to French publication L’Equipe, the player will undergo a medical today ahead of the move being officially confirmed later this week.

The Spanish full-back arrived on Merseyside last summer as back-up to Glen Johnson. However, he found opportunities hard to come by – particularly during the second-half of the season – and was deemed surplus to requirements following the arrival of Nathaniel Clyne and the return of Andre Wisdom from his loan spell.

Manquillo, 21, will now try to make a name for himself in France. The Under-21 international played 19 times for the Reds in all competitions, including ten appearances in the Premier League.

Despite only featuring 16 times in three years for his parent club, he has a La Liga winners medal in his collection, as well as three other major trophy wins on his CV. We hope that he’s able to recreate this success again in the future.

All the best Javier. We’ll always remember the table tennis.
