Ings explains the tactic he plans to use to score goals for Liverpool

Summer signing Danny Ings has enjoyed mixed success in pre-season, but has shown glimpses of the quality he possesses. He has given us a preview of how he plans to play heading into the 2015/16 season, and claims his tactic will be to make devastating runs in behind, as reported by the Liverpool Echo.

Our style of play benefits from pacy forwards who stretch defences and make clever runs, with the counter-attack arguably one of our best tactics.

Fitting into this mould would go a long way towards endearing Ings to both Brendan Rodgers and the fans, and would give us an excellent option alongside or instead of fellow Anfield new boy Christian Benteke.

Ings insists he has worked on his speed and the runs he makes in recent years, and has found excellent results.

“After my knee injury [in 2012] I sort of devoted my whole time to working on my speed, my movement, and my creativity,” Ings said.

“What I’ve found was really effective, even at Championship level, was making runs constantly in behind.

“As soon as a defender switches off that run in behind is so effective.

“As long as there’s someone stretching the pitch and you’ve got your creative players behind you in that space – and you’ve got players at this football club to feed those runs – you can be an effective team.

“It’s certainly something I’m looking forward to.”

The former Burnley man may not have been the marquee striker signing everyone was hoping for when he first arrived at the club, but he is an excellent option to have up front, and has practically his whole career ahead of him.

Hopefully Rodgers is able to get the best out of Ings, and we see the kind of runs he’s talking about making used to best effect.

Runs in behind will maximise the passing ability of Coutinho, Adam Lallana and Roberto Firmino in attacking midfield – and our strikers simply didn’t make them last term. Hopefully in Ings, Benteke and a returning Daniel Sturridge we’ll have the forwards capable of doing so this time around.
