Former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy has told the Echo that he was offered the chance to become the club’s new first-team coach this summer, a position which eventually went to his former teammate, Gary McAllister.
The Reds let both Colin Pascoe and Mike Marsh go at the end of last season, following an in depth review from our owners, with Sean O’Driscoll the other new man to come in as a result of the sweeping changes.
However, Murphy has now revealed that he could also have joined Brendan Rodgers’ new look set-up, and explains that the move didn’t come off due to his current media commitments.

“A few weeks ago I did have a chat with Brendan about the possibility of maybe working with him and the club again but it didn’t quite materialise,” he said. “It was actually an honour to be thought of by him.
“Being in his company for a few hours was great, he was very impressive and as we know Gary McAllister got that job, who is a friend of mine and is a very bright and experienced coach. He’s a good guy and I wish him all the best and the club all the best, but it was nice to be thought of.”
The 38-year-old, who played almost 250 times for us during a seven year spell, currently works with the BBC – as part of both their television and radio coverage. On the plus side, the treble winner refused to rule out taking a similar role with us somewhere down the line.
“I enjoy the media stuff with the BBC and on the radio, and ideally I would like to get back involved (in the game),” he added. “But I’m not closing any doors because you never know. It’s that family balance but if the right job comes along you have to seriously consider it.”
A number of former Liverpool players have been taking up new coaching roles this year. Harry Kewell recently joined Premier League newcomers Watford and will coach the Under-21 side next season (via Daily Mail).
