Nathaniel Clyne talks title challenge, defensive qualities and old teammates

Nathaniel Clyne believes that Liverpool have the quality to challenge for the Premier League title this season – having come close two years ago.

The Reds finished in second place back in 2014, when Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge inspired us to within touching distance of success, but slumped to sixth last year without the aid of our star strike pair.

However, Clyne – who is one of seven new signings at Anfield this summer – believes that the fresh influx of quality into the squad can help rejuvenate Brendan Rodgers’ side and inspire another exciting season on Merseyside.

“Two seasons ago, Liverpool were pushing and nearly won the league, so we’re not too far away and with the additions to the team this year, we are looking to push on again,” he said, in quotes taken by the Liverpool Echo.

“Hopefully we can push for the title this season. You can see with the team and the quality that we have got that we can have a special season.”

Clyne, who joined us from Southampton last month, will be playing alongside former teammates Adam Lallana and Dejan Lovren at Anfield this season.

Asked what role they played in bringing him to the club, he replied: “They told me about how good the club is and it would be exciting if I joined them. When Liverpool came in for me, it just seemed like the right choice. I spoke with my agent and my family and they agreed.”

The 24-year-old replaces Glen Johnson at Liverpool. The experienced full-back frustrated many a supporter over the years with his inconsistent performances, particularly defensively, but Clyne is confident that he will face no such problems.

“I’m confident in my ability and the player I am that I can make the next step up. I wouldn’t have moved if I didn’t think I was ready. I’m fairly confident defending and one v ones, and I still think there is more in me for getting forward. If I can add to my game going forward that would be great.

As for why he chose Liverpool this summer, he added: “If you work hard you get the big opportunity and chance to play at a big club like Liverpool. We had a great season at Southampton and had one of the best defensive records in the league. That put my name on the map.

“I think it’s important to get as much game-time in as you can while you are young. I’ve worked my way up through the leagues and now I’m here at a top club like Liverpool so happy days.”
