Tottenham could make surprise move for Liverpool’s Fabio Borini

Tottenham have today been linked with a shock move for Liverpool outcast Fabio Borini. Reports in Italy, cited here by the Liverpool Echo, suggest that Spurs could turn to the 24-year-old if they miss out on Saido Berahino.

It’s hard to believe that Tottenham would be interested in a player like Borini, who scored just one goal in all competitions last season, but the Reds would surely jump at the chance to get a deal done if it were possible.

Borini, who enjoyed relative success during a loan spell with Sunderland during the 2013-14 season, has fallen well down the pecking order of Brendan Rodgers’ side since the summer arrivals of Christian Benteke, Danny Ings and Divock Origi – who is back with us following a year on loan at Lille.

Indeed, he has been training away from the first-team this summer (via The Guardian), along with teammate Jose Enrique and former colleague Mario Balotelli, who has now completed his move to AC Milan.

Conversely, the Evening Standard claim that Spurs have set their sights on QPR striker Charlie Austin, but with any new signing only likely to be used as back-up to first-choice centre-forward Harry Kane, it is possible that they could see Borini as a decent rotation option – particularly with only days left in the transfer window.

It would certainly give us all a laugh if this one did prove to be true.
