It’s a few seasons ago now, but one of the great mysteries of Brendan Rodgers’ first season in charge was his treatment of Nuri Sahin, a midfielder heralded at the time as a wonderful signing.
We acquired him on loan from Real Madrid, and the Turk started excellently – bagging goals in the League Cup and registering assists in the Premier League. This was a Bundesliga Player of the Year winner, a midfielder with serious talent. But come January, his loan was terminated after he hadn’t featured in some time.
The player slammed Rodgers on his exit, bemoaning the fact he was played off the striker and not in his natural deep-lying playmaker position.
“Brendan Rodgers wanted me to play as a 10 but I do not play behind the forwards,” he said, reported by Sky Sports.
“I spoke with him and asked him why I was playing there. It is not my real position. The boss could not answer me… still, I am not sorry about it.
“To play in the red jersey and be in Anfield is something marvellous.
“Maybe if I had not gone there I would not have been able to return to Borussia Dortmund. For that, I am happy.
“But I have left Brendan Rodgers, thanks be to God.”
With Rodgers under immense pressure three seasons later, a clip has emerged of Jurgen Klopp, the man touted by most fans as the favourite to replace him, questioning the Northern Irishman’s methods regarding Sahin.
It should be noted that Klopp and Rodgers have spoken highly of each other in the past, and this video is not new, but the fact it’s circling the internet symbolises how Liverpool fans are swaying towards the German.
