Wonderkid defender Joe Gomez has torn his anterior cruciate ligament and is expected to miss the entire season as a result, the Guardian has revealed.
The 18-year-old hobbled off with ten minutes to go of England Under-21s’ fixture with Kazakhstan on Wednesday, and while their manager Gareth Southgate suggested at the time it wasn’t too bad an injury, tests have since revealed it’s a very serious one – in what will be decimating news to the teenager.
Gomez signed from Charlton this summer as a relative unknown, but after wowing in pre-season, earned the right to start the campaign in the first-team at left-back. Alberto Moreno since took his spot, but with Jurgen Klopp replacing Brendan Rodgers as manager, Gomez had a genuine chance to compete for a spot at centre-back.
Gomez must be devastated by the news after emerging as one of our top talents. He has the talent and the mindset to come back frokm this awful setback though, and we wish him all the very best on his long road to recovery.
