Borussia Dortmund have parted company with their Under-23 coach David Wagner, who is set to jet in to Merseyside for talks with Liverpool, ESPN report.

“Borussia Dortmund are an extraordinary club with fantastic fans. In spite of that I seek a new sporting challenge after a great time at Dortmund,” Wagner announced, having been at the club since 2011 after joining from Hoffenheim.

Wagner was Jurgen Klopp’s best man at his wedding, and is also the godfather of his youngest daughter – having formed a close friendship during their playing days with Mainz.

Klopp has already brought Zeljko Buvac and Peter Krawietz from Dortmund to bolster his coaching staff when he arrived, and it now seems that Wagner may also arrive – probably to work with the academy considering his previous roles. (He coached the Under-19s at Hoffenheim.

Wagner was born in Germany, but actually represented USA at international level – earning eight caps between 1996 and 1998.

He was widely expected to join last month upon his best friend’s appointment, but it now seems he will eventually join his former boss at Anfield, having refused to rule out the possibility originally (via Dortmund fanzine schwatzgelb).
