If reports in this today’s Metro are to be believed (they shouldn’t be), we’re looking to sign Isco from Real Madrid this January. We take a look at why it’s highly unlikely.
1) A questionable source…
The paper cite German tabloid Bild as their source for the story. Bild have a reputation in Germany that’s barely more reputable than the Metro themselves.
According to them, we were going to sign Falcao to replace Suarez. FALSE. Or perhaps they meant we’d sign Sane? FALSE. Never mind, third time lucky, Raheem Sterling was definitely going to sign for Bayern Munich. FALSE.
Need we go on?
2) We don’t need him…
We don’t think we’re being biased when we say we’ve got one of the best attacking midfield units in the league.
Coutinho and Firmino are obviously the main event (Klopp even wanted Firmino when he was at Dortmund), but we’ve also got the ever-improving Ibe, the out-on-loan Markovic, and plenty of competent support players such as Lallana and Milner.
Where would he fit in? In theory Isco is one of the hottest young properties in world football – but we wouldn’t have him in the starting eleven ahead of our two Brazilians, would you?
3) Why would Madrid sell him?
The idea that Madrid would sell the player is preposterous.
Firstly, according to WhoScored, Isco has started nine games and made three substitute appearances in La Liga so far this season. Guess how many league games Madrid have played…? Twelve. That’s right, Isco has played in every one of his side’s domestic games so far this term, not to mention that he’s also started all five of their Champions League games.
Secondly, he’s Spanish and regularly plays for the national side, which undoubtedly goes down well with the Madrid faithful.
Finally, if Ronaldo does leave (as is being reported), they’ll need him in their side more than ever.
The Metro claim Isco has “asked to leave”. You can be confident that he hasn’t.
(But you never know…!)
Rafa did us a favour when he sold us Sturridge from Chelsea. If it’s true that he’s going to get sacked from Madrid over the coming weeks (via SkySports), he might fancy trying to force through a deal just to put one over on his current employers.
