Klopp lavishes praise on Mignolet, claiming he’s delighted with Liverpool’s no.1

Any Liverpool fans hoping Simon Mignolet would be replaced in January will be today disappointed after Jurgen Klopp confirmed that he doesn’t want to replace the Belgian and is in fact very happy with his no.1’s contribution.

Mignolet made a high-profile blunder against Bordeaux, but the German manager insisted he’s very pleased with Liverpool’s goalkeeper situation at today’s pre-Southampton press conference.

“I’m absolutely satisfied with goalkeeper situation, sorry to kill your stories about German goalkeepers, Stoke or wherever. We have enough high quality goalkeepers,” he said, reported in the Echo.

“Mignolet is now smarter than he’s ever been. He’s young enough to develop, to improve. It’s not the easiest situation before I came here but since I came here, nothing to criticise.

“Everyone is watching for a second Neuer but he’s in a good way.”

We had been linked with Timo Horn, Marc Andre-ter Stegen and Jack Butland, but Klopp’s either not interested, or cleverly installing confidence in Mignolet after the Europa League mistake.

Adam Bogdan is expected to start the League Cup tie with Southampton at St. Mary’s tomorrow, and Klopp confirmed as much – providing he gets the nod from the his goalkeeper coach.

“I have to ask John Achterberg!” he continued.

Bruce Grobbelaar is the most high profile name to get on Mignolet’s back recently, but Klopp’s open support for the Belgian is great to see.

If the manager’s backing him, supporters need to as well – and should recognise that only Joe Hart has kept more clean-sheets in 2015.
