Liverpool could be set to offer Mignolet a new contract

According to a Tweet by the Express’ Merseyside sports reporter Paul Joyce, we could be about to offer Simon Mignolet a new contract.

Klopp used his Southampton pre-match press conference to come out in support our 27-year-old stopper, and it seems he has now asked the club to extend his deal.

It’s a wise move – Mignolet is clearly a “confidence” ‘keeper; excellent when he’s feeling good, woeful when he’s under pressure. Jurgen is probably hoping that his lavish praise combined with a new contract will help cement his current good form for the rest of the season.

We’re big fans of the Belgian here at EOTK – there are few better shot stoppers in the league, and it seems his sometimes-hairy moments with the ball at his feet are slowly being eradicated from his game.

He’s also at the perfect age for a keeper. It’s a well-known fact that goalies mature later than regular players, with some of the games’ greatest talents, both past and present, not hitting their peak until well into their thirties.

Unless we can sign one of the top handful of keepers in the world (unlikely given our recent lack of success and no Champions League football to offer), there is little point in replacing Simon at the present time.

It seems the best course of action would be to sign one of Europe’s hottest prospects (such as Guillaume Hubert, who we were recently linked with) and allow him to spend a few seasons out on loan, in much the same way as Chelsea did with Thibaut Courtois.

What do you think? Is Mignolet good enough to be our number one for years to come? Let us know in the comments.
