Liverpool’s January transfer budget & key targets named by Telegraph

Respected Merseyside correspondent Chris Bascombe states in the Telegraph that Jurgen Klopp has £20m to spend this January should he want to.

As a club we’ve a great history of securing top talent in January, with Luis Suarez, Coutinho, Daniel Sturridge, Javier Mascherano and Daniel Agger all joining in the winter period.

Despite this, the Telegraph reckon the manager may wait until the summer to make proper enforcements, but that Klopp has the money and the backing of FSG should he find appropriate targets.

Bascombe writes that Marko Grujic is a definitive target for Liverpool, but as is becoming an odd tactic for us in the transfer market, he’ll arrive in the summer after a loan deal at the club we’re buying him from: Red Star Belgrade.

Joel Matip is another in that situation, with the Cameroonian centre-back out of contact in the summer. If Liverpool confirm a deal for the Schalke defender this month, he won’t arrive until the end of the campaign after signing a Bosman deal.

Interestingly, he also rubbished the new keeper rumours, as Klopp has himself a number of times.

Elsewhere, Leroy Sane has been named as a target – although he’ll not be attainable in January – while interestingly Joe Allen has been linked with a move away from Anfield for maybe the first time.

So really, Bascombe’s told us nothing we don’t know already – although it’s good to have it confirmed by a proper source.

This piece was published before yesterday’s miserable West Ham defeat, so the urgency to bring in a new face or two may have increased.

Shockingly, Liverpool have never scored less goals after 20 games of a season in our history.
