Before the end of the week we’ll know if Shalke’s Joel Matip will remain in the Bundesliga or if he’ll be joining Liverpool on a Bosman transfer.
That’s according to German publication Revier Sport, who claim the Bundesliga giants will announce Matip’s future publicly by Friday, although the report predicts he’ll “probably” move to Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool.
Matip is out of contract in the summer, and as he’s already 24, he’d switch to Anfield on a free transfer – a fantastic coup if we have indeed get the deal over the line.
Revier Sport confirm that Shalke have made Matip several improved contract offers, including one final one last week, but the Cameroonian international has yet to put pen to paper.
If Matip does join Liverpool, it would represent a fantastic piece of business. He’s tall, strong and excellent in the air, meaning he’ll hopefully shore up our current set-piece fragility. He also scores goals (23 in total for the Germans) and is calm enough with the ball at his feet to be used in holding midfield.
