Despite losing on penalties to Man City in the League Cup, we acquitted ourselves fairly well over the 120 minutes, especially after Sakho’s early injury probably ruined Klopp’s planned ‘game management’.
Here’s a look at how our players performed on an individual basis:
GK: Simon Mignolet 7/10
This is probably the hardest score to assign. He made a shocking error for the City goal, but more than redeemed himself later in the tie. He also went the right way for every one of City’s spot kicks.
LB: Alberto Moreno 6.5/10
You know what you’re getting from Moreno – bombs down the wing, 100mph crosses, and shocking defending. Today was no different. Should have given away a pen, but credit to him for getting back in the first place.
CB: Mamadou Sakho 6/10
Sakho was forced off after 25 minutes, so it’s unfair to pass too much judgement.
CB: Lucas 9/10 (Empire of the Kop MotM)
Considering he’s something of a “makeshift” centre-back, Lucas has adapted to the role splendidly. Fantastic awareness and stunning covering tackles. So unlucky to see his pen saved.
RB: Nathaniel Clyne 7.5
Kept City’s threat down their left to a minimum and wasn’t frightened when he had the ball at his feet. Played an important role in our goal.
CM: Jordan Henderson 7/10
Not the captain’s greatest performance, but didn’t do anything wrong. Would have been great to see a bit more inventiveness from him in the first half.
CM: Emre Can 7/10
Grew into the game as it went on and was one of our better players in extra time. The only one of our players to score in the shootout.
AML: Philippe Coutinho 7.5/10
Coutinho struggled to get involved for large parts of the game and his relationship with Firmino never quite clicked. That said, he scored the vital goal to force extra time.
AMC: Roberto Firmino 6/10
It didn’t quite work for the Brazilian today. Showed plenty of neat touches but his vision and final product deserted him for long spells. Was replaced by Origi.
ST: Daniel Sturridge 6.5/10
Sturridge deserves 10/10 for getting through two hours of football, but he was thoroughly beaten by half time in extra time.
CB: Kolo Toure 7.5/10
Toure showed why he deserves a new contract with a performance that rolled back the years.
AML: Adam Lallana 7.5/10
After a long spell on the sidelines, Lallana was probably our best player in extra time.
ST: Divock Origi 8/10
We looked like an altogether better and more fluid attacking unit once Origi came on the pitch. Surely Klopp has to start him and Sturridge together more regularly?
