Liverpool skipper says blunder-happy keeper did ‘brilliantly’

Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson heaped praise on Simon Mignolet after yesterday’s League Cup Final defeat to Manchester City.

In fairness to the Belgian, he made a series of unbelievable saves against the Sky Blues – most notably from Sergio Aguero. In the first-half he tipped a shot onto the post from the Argentine and late in injury time palmed another effort wide.

“Definitely in extra time I felt as though we could have got the win,” Henderson told the Liverpool Echo. “I know they had some good chances as well and Simon (Mignolet) did brilliantly and made some good saves to keep them out.

“But I felt as though we were very dangerous on the counter-attack, we defended well and there were some brilliant performances from everyone really.

“It’s hard to take at the minute it will be difficult but we need to take the positives out of this game and finish off the season well.

“You look at the players they were all drained physically, mentally – everything was left out there and I think that’s all you can ask of the players. With a little bit of luck we win the game and lift the trophy, but it just wasn’t our day.”

Despite Mignolet’s occasional heroics during the Wembley 120 minutes, he’ll be more remembered for his blunder which gifted City the lead.

The 27-year-old let Fernandinho’s shot slip underneath him, when in truth if he’d have just stood still he could have cleared it with his right boot!

For the umpteenth time this season, a Mignolet error has directly led to an opposition goal, and it simply cannot continue.

After the game, Jamie Carragher said that Liverpool need to actively replace the stopper (via the Echo), despite the fact he was recently awarded a five year contract extension.

It’ll be interesting to see what Klopp does in the summer regarding the situation. There’ll be some top keepers available at the end of this season, and almost every supporter would prefer we went in for an upgrade on Mignolet.
