“Klopp is not Harry Potter” according to Dortmund chief

The chief executive of Borussia Dortmund, Hans-Joachim Watzke, has backed Klopp to be successful here at Liverpool – but warned he is “not Harry Potter nor Merlin” and patience is needed.

“There is money at Liverpool so there’s no problem. Jurgen needs time. He brings good spirit to the team and the whole club,” said Watzke (via Express).

“His competence is to give spirit to the club. But he needs time. Two or three years is the must. The next step will be to restore Liverpool to the Champions League. That’s not so easy.

“He must have time to build a style of football against teams that are very defensive. You can’t do this job in three months. He came to Borussia Dortmund and in his second season we went eight games without a win but we gave him a new deal.

“People at Liverpool, the owners, believe in him and he has the time. It’s better now to beat Manchester City and lose to Swansea than vice versa.

“It’s easier to find the style to beat Swansea than to beat Man City. Jurgen is a fantastic coach and if the owners of Liverpool believe in Jurgen they will have success.

“But he’s not Harry Potter nor Merlin. He’s a coach who does hard work.”

The fact that Dortmund gave him a new contract after an eight-game winless streak is remarkable and deserves credit. Would our owners (or more importantly, our fans) give him the time and space if we went on a run like that at the start of next season.

Sadly, you’d have to think that the fans wouldn’t, even if the owners would.

Patience.
