Lothar Matthaus tells Gotze to snub Anfield switch

German legend Lothar Matthaus has angered Liverpool fans by urging his compatriot to snub a move to Merseyside.

Matthaus, who played in five World Cups and holds the record for most German international caps (150), has told our number one target that he should move back to Dortmund.

“Gotze back to Dortmund would simply be a good fit,” Matthaus said (via Echo).

“Our World Cup hero is a child of the Borussia Dortmund academy.

“He might have ruined it for some fans following his move to Bayern, but I feel he does not owe anyone an apology over his decision to go for a new challenge elsewhere.

“Things unfortunately didn’t pan out as everybody expected. But both Gotze and Dortmund know from each other what they bring to the table. He will soon win the fans over again after his first few goals for BVB.

“Would a return to Dortmund mean he has failed at Bayern? I think that would be harsh to say.”

Matthaus had two spells with Bayern, so his comments might come as a surprise. He made 113 appearances between 1984 and 1988, and a further 189 appearances between 1992 and 2000.

Thankfully, it seems like Gotze will not allow Matthaus to influence his decision. He is reportedly keen on a reunion with Klopp (via SkySports) and is open to a switch to England.

Let’s hope he’s “leaning” sooner rather than later!
