If we’d asked you before the game to pick who would be the heroes of the night, the last two names you’d have probably come up with would be our centre back pairing of Mamadou Sakho and Dejan Lovren.
And yet, the Frenchman and the Croatian produced the goods when it mattered most. Sakho made the impossible seem possible when he nodded in Coutinho’s corner with 13 minutes to go, and Lovren rose highest to head home the winner and send Anfield into meltdown.
The two players were quick to congratulate each other after the match – but it wasn’t the typical high-five, butt-slap, or enduring embrace.
Instead, it was a warrior-like coming together of heads, an aggressive shout, a manly proof of power. In short, it was legendary.
