Rafa Benitez romantically bringing Liverpool legend in as new Newcastle centre-back

Rafa Benitez signed young Danish defender Daniel Agger from Brondby in 2006, and in 2016, he’s trying to bring veteran Danish defender Daniel Agger back to English shores once more, according to the Shields Gazette.

Agger thrived under Benitez, establishing a reputation as one of the Premier League’s best central defenders during his peak. The 31-year-old went back to his boyhood club Brondby in summer 2014, with Brendan Rodgers not a fan, but could be signed by Benitez for a second time.

Our former Champions League winning manager hasn’t signed a deal with Newcastle yet, but it looks more and more likely that the Spaniard will agree to stay on despite their relegation to the Championship.

Agger is available on a free transfer, and would add much needed class to their shaky backline. The tattooed centre-back is a significant upgrade on the likes of Steven Taylor and Fabricio Coloccini and would hope to be promoted back into the Premier League in his first season back.

Benitez got the best out of Agger during his time on Merseyside, and the partnership makes sense. At 31, the defender should be playing at the highest level still, but has regressed. A switch to a team that will potentially win the Championship will give Agger a new burst of life, we hope. At this rate, Newcastle will be every Liverpool fan’s second team!
