Joel Matip’s hefty signing on fee and new six-figure Liverpool wage named

Liverpool’s Bosman signing Joel Matip will become one of the club’s highest paid players, reports German publication Bild.

As well as a £3.8m signing on fee, the Cameroonian centre-back will earn £5.4m-per-year – around £100k/week – on the four year deal he agreed to sign earlier in 2016.

Matip is one of the Bundesliga’s best centre-backs though, so the fact we’re getting him without a transfer fee alleviates this cost.

Matip is not yet 25, but has racked up 262 career appearances, scoring 24 goals in the process. He’s revered at Schalke and should significantly boost our defensive line, especially with Mamadou Sakho’s imminent ban and the fact Kolo Toure and Martin Skrtel are likely to leave.

The defender prides himself on his aerial ability and his calmness on the ball – something we lack in our back four.

“Liverpool are a wicked club, and naturally it does not hurt that I already know the coach,” Matip told Bild.

“I had the feeling that Klopp and Liverpool are ideal for me, but the thought of leaving was naturally not easy for me.”

While Matip is the first defender confirmed to sign this summer, a left-back is thought to be close. Ben Chilwell of Leicester City is a top target, according to the Telegraph, and could become the fourth signing of the summer following deals for Marko Grujic, Matip and Loris Karius.

Liverpool unveiled the German goalkeeper yesterday, looking to get our summer business done as early as possible.
