New Liverpool signing fires warning to new team-mates

Loris Karius is not content to back up Simon Mignolet from the bench, and it doesn’t look like he’s ready to rotate with the Belgian either!

The 22-year-old was announced as Liverpool’s third signing of the summer yesterday evening, following completed deals for Marko Grujic and Joel Matip, and told the current goalkeepers he was there to play week in, week out.

“I wouldn’t make the move if I thought I was just going to sit on the bench,” Karius told the club’s website.

“I want to play and I feel like I will be able to do that if I do well in training and pre-season and the pre-season games.

“I’m confident. I’ve played almost 100 league games in Germany, so I’m young, but I’m experienced. I’m not afraid of anything.

“I want to be in goal and play for Liverpool every week. And then win a trophy with the club, that’s what everyone wants. I want to do my part and help.”

Karius’s comments indicate a stopper with fire in his belly, which is fantastic, but with Mignolet signing a five year contract extension last season – the new signing can expect a fight for minutes.

Jurgen Klopp’s plan is clearly to have two keepers with an equal chance of nailing down the starting role, meaning Mignolet will simply not be able to get away with the mistakes he made last season.

The Belgian made four errors which directly led to Premier League goals, as well as committing a blunder in the League Cup Final defeat to Manchester City.

Unlike Mignolet, Karius hasn’t gone to the Euros, so will play the majority of pre-season and have a chance to impress his new coaches. We can’t wait to see him in action.
