Lazar Markovic was denied a winning end to his season-long loan in Turkey as his side were beaten 1-0 by Galatasaray in the Turkish cup final.

The 22-year-old Serbian winger – who was shipped out on loan by Brendan Rodgers after just one season at Anfield – was forced to settle for a place on the bench, but he played in the final 22 minutes after replacing Alper Potuk.

The only goal of the game was scored by former Arsenal striker Lukas Podolski, who rose highest to head home Jason Denayer’s flick after half an hour (via FourFourTwo).

The result means Markovic will return to England with nothing to show for his time away; Fenerbahce finished second in the league, five points behind Besiktas, and were dumped out of the Europa League in the last-16 following a 4-2 aggregate loss to Portugal’s Sporting Braga.

It remains to be seen whether Klopp decides to retain his services – it probably all depends on how well he can perform in pre-season. Serbia are not in Euro 2016, so he will have a whole summer to impress.
