Reds linked to Barcelona ace who now has bargain release clause, says Catalan paper

Liverpool could make an offer for Barcelona centre-back Marc Barta this summer, with the 25-year-old Spanish international seemingly surplus to requirements at Camp Nou.

L’esportiu de Catalunya claim that because of his lack of minutes during the 2015/16 campaign, a clause in his contract has been triggered which lowers his release clause to €8m – pretty cheap for a player with Champions League experience and eight caps for Spain.

They report that Liverpool are considering paying that fee, and that Bartra is keen on a Premier League switch, with his individual progression stagnating due to the fact Gerard Pique and Javier Mascherano are ahead of him in the central defensive pecking order.

Liverpool have already signed Joel Matip this summer, and Mamadou Sakho will be available to compete with Dejan Lovren having avoided a drugs ban – but our defence was so poor at times last season wholesale changes could still be made.

A new goalkeeper in Loris Karius has already signed, but a left-back to replace the inconsistent Alberto Moreno is surely a priority. Teenager Ben Chilwell looks the most likely to arrive, but fans would prefer we acquired an established fullback with more defensive nous, rather than rely on the hot prospect to come in for Moreno immediately.
