LFC ‘a step away’ from Porto’s Mexican star Hector Herrera, but contrary reports emerge on same evening

Hector Herrera; heard much about him?

We hadn’t, until last night, when Fox Sports Mexico journalist Vladimir Garcia tweeted that we were ‘a step away’ from sealing a deal for the Porto midfielder who’s currently away with his country at the Copa America…

Herrera has been with the Portuguese since 2013, when they snapped up from boyhood club Pachuca. Now 26, Herrera enjoyed his best season to date just gone, bagging nine goals during Porto’s league campaign and establishing a reputation as a leader in the middle.

But on the same hectic evening, beIN SPORTS reported that the player flatteringly nicknamed ‘Skunk’ is instead close to a move to Napoli – and a transfer will be finalised in a few weeks.

Interestingly, they suggest a deal will only be confirmed once Gonzalo Higuain has moved to Liverpool – which for us doesn’t make sense – as Napoli are well bankrolled and the players play in different positions. (Herrera would be no replacement for 36-goal Higuain…)

We’ve been linked with a number of central midfielders this summer, including Piotr Zielinski and Mamoud Dahoud, but as of yet – no deal has come into fruition – although Marko Grujic completed his transfer back in January and will join up with his new team-mates for pre-season.
