Our friends at This Is Anfield have conducted an interview with Paul Joyce, in which they’ve asked the respected Liverpool correspondent for the Express about our summer transfer plans.
Actually, it turns out Joyce doesn’t know much more than the rest of us at this point in time.
He reiterated the point that Ben Chilwell is the primary left-back target, and that there are no plans to replace Alberto Moreno directly – while confirming that the Gonzalo Higuain rumours were sadly nonsense – with Liverpool having no plans to sign a striker.
Joyce’s most interesting comment was regarding Mario Gotze, who rejected our advances earlier this summer in favour of staying at Bayern Munich – despite them making it publicly clear the player is surplus to requirements.
“Gotze’s playing whatever game he is playing – but I could still see that one being resurrected at some point as Bayern have made it pretty clear he doesn’t feature for them,” Joyce said.
“Is he really going to stay for a final year if he isn’t going to play football?
“It’s ok saying those things on May 23rd but when it gets to August 23rd? I don’t know if it’s the end of that one.”
Either way, it’s not like we should put our eggs in Gotze’s basket, considering the way he’s already embarrassed us – and Jurgen Klopp and his backroom staff will have their eye on alternative targets.
We reckon that any major Liverpool signings will come largely out of the blue this summer, as it is becoming increasingly clear the Merseyside Press do not have a hotline to Klopp in the same way they did to Brendan Rodgers.
We’ve acquired a goalkeeper, a centre-back and a left-back, but having watched the Europe League Final capitulation – it was clear experienced pros who can automatically improve the starting XI must arrive.
Time will tell if that proves to be the case, but it’s still very early in the window.
