Liverpool youngster to make unexpected full international debut at Euro 2016 after training injury to teammate

Liverpool fans now have another reason to tune into Wales v Slovakia this afternoon.

As if Joe Allen’s international tournament debut was not enough of a draw, it now looks likely that young Reds goalkeeper Danny Ward will make his first start for Wales.

talkSPORT report that Welsh no.1 Wayne Hennessey suffered a back injury in training, so Ward is expected to fill in for the 5pm kick off (UK time).

Ward has just two senior caps to date, with both of his first-team appearances for Wales coming as a second-half substitute.

The 22-year-old stopper does have elite experience under his belt, having started two Premier League games late this season.

He spent most of the 2015-16 campaign on loan at Aberdeen, making 21 Scottish Premiership starts, while also playing in six Europa League games.

Before his first senior call up for Wales, which came in November 2013, Ward represented his country at U17, U19 and U21 level.

After today’s game with Martin Skrtel’s Slovakia, Wales play England in Lens on Thursday.
