The agent of Ricardo Rodriguez has confirmed that there is a release clause in his Wolfsburg contract.
According to Sky Sports, the Swiss international defender, who played 90 minutes as his country opened up their Euro 2016 campaign with a 1-0 win over Albania yesterday, could be available for £19m.
Sky Sports quotes Rodriguez’s agent Gianluca Di Domenico as telling TMW Radio: “Today, Ricardo Rodriguez has a termination clause, which was not there before. You have to respect the contracts.”
Arsenal have been linked with the 23-year-old most recently. We were credited with an interest by the Daily Mail in 2014, before signing Alberto Moreno, who is expected to be replaced this summer.
Moreno’s inconsistent defensive performances, highlighted most notably in the Europa League final defeat to Sevilla, have seemingly made up Jurgen Klopp’s mind over signing a left-back.
Leicester City teenager Ben Chilwell and Cologne defender Jonas Hector have been mooted as our top targets, as the Metro reports, but Rodriguez strangely does not seem to be on our radar.
Klopp will know the player well from his time in Germany. He is a very solid defender – physically suited to the Premier League – and has a good attacking output – averaging 1.5 key passes per game last season.
And he has excellent pedigree for a player of his tender age, having already amassed 38 international caps, 135 Bundesliga appearances and 27 outings either in the Champions League or Europa League.
If Rodriguez is available at that price, then we should be in for him before somebody beats us to him.
