Liverpool are at the front of the queue in the race to sign highly-rated Real Madrid midfielder, Mateo Kovacic.

According to TalkSport and Gazzetta dello Sport, we were initially keen on a loan move – but Madrid are not interested in such a deal.

22-year-old Kovacic only joined Real last summer after his previous club, Inter Milan, were forced to sell him so they could comply with UEFA’s financial fair play rules.

Since his move he has struggled to hold down a regular place in the side, and Madrid now want to get him off their wage list. They will not, however, accept a transfer fee of anything less than what they purchased him for.

TalkSport claim that we face competition for his signature from Serie A giants Roma. Kovacic knows the league well after three impressive seasons in Italy before his move to Spain.

It seems like this one could rumble on and on.
