Emre Can once again found himself sitting on the bench as the Germans beat Northern Ireland 1-0 in Paris.

Mario Gomez’s goal after half an hour was enough to give the Low’s men the win, but they were unconvincing for large periods of the game despite dominating.

The result meant Germany won Group C with seven points from their three games. Poland also finished on seven, but the Germans edged them out thanks to a superior goal difference.

For Can, however, it was a night to forget. He was once again left out as Joachim Low went with Kroos and Khedira in front of a back four consisting of Kimmich, Boateng, Hummels, and Hector.

It had been though Can might play a part in the match given Germany’s domination of the group.

Northern Ireland finished 3rd, but after Turkey beat Czech Republic 2-0, they qualified as one of the best third-place sides.
