England lineup vs Iceland confirmed: Just one Liverpool player included

The teams have been announced for England’s Euro 2016 last 16 clash with Iceland, and there’s only one Liverpool player included. Daniel Sturridge is the only one to get a spot in Roy Hodgson’s side, with the rest of the travelling Reds having to settle for a place on the bench.

Sturridge has been excellent when he’s played, so unquestionably deserves his starting spot. He’s looked the most hungry for goals when given the chance, and his late goal against Wales was absolutely massive.

Adam Lallana has also been superb, so may feel a little hard done by after missing out – especially as he’s being replaced by Raheem Sterling, who has been really poor throughout the tournament. He was carrying an injury picked up in training which could have impacted Roy Hodgson’s decision, but he seemed convinced that he was fit and ready to compete if selected (via the Echo).

Nathaniel Clyne has also performed well, although the two Tottenham full-backs have looked likely to be Hodgson’s first choice pairing throughout the competition.

James Milner hasn’t really featured all that much, while Jordan Henderson’s recent injury history seems to have played a part in his regular omission from the side. We may well see one or two more Liverpool players come off the bench, but Sturridge is the one we’ll all be watching.
