Welcome to Hodge-ball, England style.

What do you do when you’re desperate for a goal and time is running out? Leave Daniel Sturridge – England’s most natural goalscorer – out of the wing, of course. Even a ten-year-old playing Football Manager wouldn’t have done that.

But Roy did.

Daniel was the only one of our five lads in the England squad to see game time tonight, as Milner, Lallana, Henderson, and Clyne watched on glumly from the bench. Milner especially could have been used as things became increasingly desperate, but Roy waited until the 86th minute to make his final change.

Daniel couldn’t make any impact on the game, as Roy’s bizarre decision to leave Townsend back in England combined with the knock to Adam Lallana’s ankle meant we were seriously short of width and he was forced to play out wide.

On the bright side, at least the boys will all be coming home to Melwood to get stuck into Klopp’s pre-season training as soon as possible.
