Liverpool fans: brace yourselves for disappointing Benteke update…

The suggestions that Christian Benteke is on the verge of a £30m switch to Crystal Palace are ‘wide of the mark’, the player’s agent Kismet Eris has told Sky Sports.

The powerful Belgian is considered surplus to Anfield requirements, but Eris says there is “nothing in these” reports which suggest he’s on the verge of a switch to the Eagles.

Benteke arrived at Liverpool for £32.5m last summer, but struggled to adapt to Jurgen Klopp’s style of football and eventually fell down the German’s pecking order.

Most Liverpool fans were delighted at the prospect of getting back virtually all of our money on the 25-year-old, but it appears no move is imminent. In fact, Eris reiterated Benteke is just one year into a five-year contract, which intimates the striker may want to stay and fight.

This is admirable, but reminds os of the Fabio Borini situation, where we had a forward the club didn’t especially need try and win a spot in the side, which in the end cost us a tidy transfer fee.

With Daniel Sturridge, Danny Ings, Divock Origi and Roberto Firmino we’re more than covered up top, and would encourage Benteke to push for the Palace move. We’d get a tidy fee, he’d get a guaranteed starting spot and the chance to resurrect his Premier League reputation.

Win, win.
