It’s been confirmed by the Echo that our latest signing, Gini Wijnaldum, will wear the number five shirt this season.

The shirt was last worn by our much-loved Danish defender, Daniel Agger. It has been vacant since the summer of 2014 when Agger left the club to return to his native Brondby.

It is the same number that the Dutch international wore at Newcastle. He wore the number ten shirt for PSV Eindhoven.

Wijnaldum has put pen to paper on a £25 million move. £23 million will be paid up front, with a further £2 million to follow in add-ons.

He has signed a five-year deal and will now immediately fly out to the United States to meet up with his new teammates. He could even feature against Chelsea on Wednesday.

At this stage, there has been no official comment from Jurgen Klopp on his capture.
