Brilliant Sturridge comments; LFC man thinks he’s best striker in the league

If Liverpool are going to enjoy the kind of season we all hope is possible, Daniel Sturridge is going to have to stay fit and produce the form we saw in 2013/14 – where he bagged 24 goals and established a reputation as one of the most lethal strikers in Europe.

In the two following campaigns we’ve only seen his world-class best over short periods, with injuries decimating his progress.

Jurgen Klopp though has tailored his training schedules and used him sparingly, meaning he’s now entering 2016/17 in prime physical condition – for the first time in three years. As we all know, his goals:minute ratio is as good as anything in the Premier League – ever.

The forward, who at 26 should be entering his peak, thinks Liverpool can win something this term, providing he proves he’s the country’s top striker…

“Getting some silverware is the aim for me this season. That’s what I’d love to do,” Sturridge told the Echo.

“We want to be as successful as possible. The main aim is to win trophies with Liverpool.

“That’s all I’ve wanted to do since I’ve been here. We have been so close to winning the Premier League, so close to winning two finals, but this year is the year when we have to try and win that trophy.

“I will let my feet do the talking. You guys have known me a long time and know I believe in myself.”

“For me to play for Liverpool and show my abilities and show my qualities has always been the aim.

“I will continue to strive to be the best player – to be the best striker in the league and do the best for this club. I will strive to win silverware for this club.”

Despite Sturridge’s undeniable ability, we wouldn’t suggest he has an automatic spot in the side, with Divock Origi pushing him very hard for the lone striker role.

With Danny Ings providing further backup and Roberto Firmino an option as a false-9, Klopp has difficult but exciting decisions to make before the culmination of the Premier League season.

There’s nothing we’d like to see more than Sturridge prove his mettle this year, and if he can outshine the likes of Sergio Aguero and Zlatan Ibrahimovic, all the better.
