Long-term rumoured Liverpool target officially signs elsewhere

Any Liverpool fans who were still holding out hope of us signing Polish midfielder Piotr Zielinski can now let that one rest, with calcionapoli reporting that a deal with the Italians is done after sharing pictures of the player holding up a Napoli scarf.

The 22-year-old starred for Empoli on loan in Serie A last term, but was owned by Udinese, who’ve now sold him to rivals Napoli who are armed with a hefty transfer budget following the sale of Gonzalo Higuain to Juventus.

He’d been a rumoured target of Liverpool at the beginning of the summer, but the Echo confirmed at the start of July that our initial bid was rejected and we stopped our chase as a result.

Instead, Liverpool signed Gini Wijnaldum to provide another option in central midfielder, joining Marko Grujic who arrived from Red Star Belgrade.

Both are powerful, dynamic and offer a legitimate goal threat – and will give our midfield more energy and firepower this term.

Zielinski is a good passer, but offers nowhere near the physicality of the players we’ve managed to bring in.
