Lazar Markovic transfer update: Liverpool boss explains Serbian situation

Jurgen Klopp has hinted that Lazar Markovic will be sold before the end of the summer, but paid the Serbian praise for his effort and commitment throughout pre-season.

Markovic spent last season on loan at Fenerbahce, but injuries stunted his development and his stock that saw us pay £20m for his services in 2014 has fallen.

Because of the number of attacking midfielders we have at our disposal, such as Coutinho, Roberto Firmino, Adam Lallana and new signing Sadio Mane, the 22-year-old is probably surplus to Klopp’s requirements – but hopefully we can get a nice fee for his talented services.

“He has developed well,” the boss told the Echo. “When we started to train, you could really see that he didn’t trust his body 100 per cent.

“He had a serious injury. We spoke about this. Everybody knows that Lazar is a very quick player, but he was not at 100%. He had some doubts about how it would be, so he needed the first one or two weeks. And since then he has became better and better and better.

“He’s in good shape. I’m not sure where his 100% is, but he’s in a good way and he’s a nice lad, good boy, funny, works hard. That’s the truth.”

“But at the end we have to see how we will build our squad. We have time between now and 31 August where maybe something will happen. Maybe it will happen earlier, maybe it will happen on the 31st, or maybe it will never happen. That’s how it is.

“At this moment we need all these players for the games and for our training sessions, and he is part of it. That’s all for now.”

At EOTK, we’d prefer Markovic to be sold and Sheyi Ojo to remain at Liverpool in an attempt to fight for minutes. If last term teaches us anything it’s that injuries will give others opportunities, and with Markovic elsewhere – Ojo will get just the right number of minutes as a 19-year-old.

Ojo is left-footed so offers something different to our attack, while his physicality is much more suited to the Premier League than Markovic’s.

Due to his age and years on his contract, we should get a decent fee for Markovic, while Christian Benteke and Mario Balotelli still need to be shipped out before the end of August.
