Crystal Palace have hefty official bid rejected by Liverpool for Benteke

Liverpool are playing hardball with any potential suitors for out of favour striker Christian Benteke, that’s for sure.

Having turned down a bid for the Belgian powerhouse earlier in the summer, reliable Liverpool journalist Paul Joyce has today claimed we’ve rejected a second Eagles offer – of £23m up front and £7m in potential add-ons.

This proves that Liverpool are holding out to recoup the £32.5m we spent on the 25-year-old last summer from Aston Villa.

Benteke’s stock has fallen, but only because he doesn’t suit Jurgen Klopp’s style – not from a footballing ability perspective. And when you consider the years on his contract and the fact transfer fees have sky-rocketed this summer, we’re not unreasonable to expect such a fee.

Palace are now armed with the £25m they just received from Everton for Yannick Bolasie, so have cash to buy Benteke should they wish.

He’s completely surplus to requirements at Liverpool, so we think this one might run and run until the end of the month until a Premier League club takes a punt on him.

We’re not worried – Benteke is a proven striker and would be fantastic for many mid-table sides. It’s only a matter of time before somebody offers the required amount – and we salute Liverpool for standing firm.
