Nobody could have envisioned what happened in the Premier League on the 2nd May, 2016. After narrowly surviving the drop during the previous season, Leicester City was certainly not the bookies’ favourite to win the League as they started taking bets at 5000/1 – greater odds than you’d get on Elvis Presley returning from the dead. Still several loyal Leicester fans placed bets at these odds, even though most of them admitted that they’d given up all hope of their team scooping the trophy.
On the morning of Saturday 1 st August, 2015, local Leicester fan Danny Brooks was in town when he decided to try his look at the betting shop. An avid Leicester supporter for all of his life, Danny wasn’t expecting the team to amount to much in the Premier League, but decided to go ahead and place a bet anyway – at odds of 5000/1, it was hard for him to resist. It turns out that his chance paid off, and quite handsomely at that – Leicester defied all odds to win the Premier League on May 2 nd 2016, turning Danny’s quick £20 bet into a £100,000 fortune that the bookmakers weren’t all too chuffed about having to pay out.
Danny’s Plans for this Season
With £100,000 cashed in from Leicester’s surprise win, Danny’s got plenty of money to splash if he feels like taking a chance on the underdog teams yet again this season. Although Leicester’s odds have drastically improved since and are now standing at 28/1 – bookmakers do not want to make the same mistake twice – Danny could choose from a range of teams with pretty high odds, starting with Hull who bookmakers are taking bets for at 1500/1. Or, there’s Sunderland, Watford, West Brom, and Burnley, all at 1000/1. If you fancy playing it a little safer, there’s Stoke and Crystal Palace at 750/1, or Swansea at 500/1. Will Danny be betting on any of these teams this season, or is he going to hope that Leicester does him proud yet again?
Premier League 2016/17
The Premier League 2016/17 season kicks off this weekend on the 13 th August, with reigning champions Leicester City taking on Hull City in the first game of the season. The game kicks off at 12:30PM, and is a home game for Hull at the KCOM Stadium. Bookies are currently taking bets at odds of 4/1 for Leicester to win the first game of the season, so if you’re hoping that last season’s champions will be playing in top form yet again, now’s the time to place your bets and cash in. In the second week, Leicester are set to take on Arsenal on the 19 th August, with fans hoping that they will fare well against the London team.
Can Leicester Win the League Again?
If last season proved anything, it is that literally anything can happen when it comes to Premier League football. After years of seeing top clubs such as Chelsea and Manchester rivals United and City taking the trophies, Leicester’s glory last season was a result that surprised even the most seasoned bookmakers and pundits. But, according to Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson’s Premier League predictions, Leicester could be in for a tougher season this time around. With high hopes for Manchester United this season with Jose Mouhrino at the helm, it might be difficult for Leicester to finish high up with Champion’s League Football each week. But, look at what they said last season, and how that turned out!
Unfortunately, Danny – or anybody else – won’t be able to replicate the huge windfall of cash this season, even if the team with the highest odds wins. Understandably, the bookies are still reeling just a little bit after Leicester’s surprise victory, and the highest odds currently stand at 1500/1, for Hull. Still, if Hull defy all odds and win the league, a £20 bet will earn you a nice pay out. However, if you’re looking to play it safe, bookies’ favourites to win include Manchester United, Chelsea,
Manchester City, Liverpool and Arsenal. Which team are you planning to back in the Premier League 2016/17 season? Whether you’re playing it safe with a top team or hoping that your team takes a leaf out of Leicester’s book, we’d love to hear from you!
