Klopp opens the door for Danny Ings to depart Liverpool

Danny Ings has worked unbelievably hard to get back fit following his season on the sidelines after rupturing an ACL at the back end of 2015, but his future is up in the air.

The 24-year-old played for our Under-23 side last weekend when his colleagues were winning at the Emirates and despite the fact we’ve accepted a bid for Christian Benteke, with Mario Balotelli eventually expected to depart – Ings is still behind Daniel Sturridge, Roberto Firmino and Divock Origi in the pecking order for one position.

While injuries will create opportunities, minutes won’t be easy to come by for a fourth choice forward when we’re not competing in the Europa League.

The Guardian reckons these quotes from Jurgen Klopp indicate that Ings is available for sale or loan, and to be completely honest – we’re inclined to agree.

“I like Danny, really,” Klopp told yesterday’s press-conference. “I talked to him last week and I said in my opinion it makes more sense if he can collect game time, if he can play. What he did, he scored a goal [for Liverpool’s under-23 side] and that’s all good, but the situation here is as it is.

“We have to build a squad where everybody has a perspective to play. Every player needs to work and be available and then I make decisions, that’s how it is. Show me your best and I will make decisions and the most comfortable decision for me would be that the decisions are really difficult to make. That’s a manager’s life.”

Most tellingly, Klopp compared Ings’ situation to Jon Flanagan’s – with the fullback already sent on loan to this weekend’s opponents Burnley.

“It’s similar to Danny,” Klopp said. “After a long injury you need time and the opportunity to play.”

We’d like to hold on to Ings because with Liverpool’s injury record, you simply don’t know who’s going to available on a weekly basis.

But if an opportunity for regular minutes arose elsewhere, we couldn’t begrudge him a move. At his age, he simply needs to be playing.
