Brendan Rodgers names player Liverpool should sign with one week left of transfer window

Brendan Rodgers signed Simon Mignolet from Sunderland one year after his appointment at Liverpool, but has suggested to the media that we need to replace him – forgetting that in Loris Karius – we already have!

The Northern Irishman, now in charge of Celtic, has advised Liverpool to target Manchester City’s out of favour stopper Joe Hart.

Since Pep Guardiola took over at the Etihad, Hart has been relegated to first backup stopper and now third-choice with Barcelona’s Claudio Bravo signed.

The England no.1 is available, that’s 100% certain, but Mignolet signed a five year extension at the end of last year and Karius will definitely get a chance.

So these quotes, for us, make no sense.

“Liverpool is a great club and if his future is not at Manchester City and he’s got the chance to go to Liverpool then I’m sure it is something that he would look at seriously,” Rodgers said.

“You’ve got Simon (Mignolet) there and the goalkeeper they brought in who is injured but I’ve always rated Joe – I think he is an outstanding keeper.

“His close friend James Milner is there as well – ‘Milly’ and Joe are very close.

“It will be interesting because it’s a great club and if he is to go there then it would be a great move for Joe.”

The fact Rodgers can’t remember Karius’s name perhaps speaks volumes in this respect!

Our young German is returning to full training and will be available for selection soon after the international break.

We predict he’ll get his first taste of action in the EFL Cup, and then be waiting in the wings should Mignolet have a nightmare. One game where he flaps at a cross and lets something in – Karius will be stepping up.
