If you’re Big Sam, it’s easy – just omit an Everton star from your England squad then let Twitter run wild with rumours you’re going to dump Rooney as captain and replace him with Jordan Henderson.

If Allardyce does indeed give the armband to Hendo tomorrow, it’s fair to say all those sarcastic remarks towards Rafa, cosy cuddles with old whiskey nose, and endless long-ball tactics will be forgotten in a heartbeat. (Or at least deliberately overlooked!)
